For many folks in our communities, the systems that are designed to keep us “safe” and “accountable” may compound and extend fear, violence, and harm rather than helping us feel safer, healthier, and more just.

Transformative Justice & Community Accountability (TJ/CA) are tools and practices for responding to violence and harm that actively cultivate safety, accountability, connection, transformation, and shared humanity and dignity.

Community Accountability and Transformative Justice:

⭐️ Create and affirm values & practices that resist abuse and oppression and encourage safety, support, and accountability;

⭐️ Develop sustainable strategies to address community members’ abusive behavior, creating a process for them to account for their actions and transform their behavior;

⭐️ Commit to ongoing development of all members of the community, and the community itself, to transform the political conditions that reinforce oppression and violence;

⭐️ Provide safety & support to community members who are violently targeted that respects their self-determination (Source: INCITE!);

⭐️ Understand that individual acts of harm not only have an individual impact, but also have a collective impact, and therefore need to be solved collectively. Source: BATJC)

The work of our TJ/CA group is to collectively learn how to translate this work and its lessons into our everyday contexts, challenges and peculiarities of our city, neighborhoods, and greater communities.

Format of our TJ/CA Learning Group:

4:30 – 5:00 – Orientation & Introduction to Transformative Justice and Community Accountability (if you have attended in the past, please feel welcome to join at 5:00!)

5:00 – 6:30 – Discussion of suggested readings, resources (readings are update below) and actionable ideas.

More about our CA/TJ Learning Group:

⭐️ Victim Services Specialist and Restorative Justice Practitioner Kim Jordan will guide our initial conversations, with the intent of emergent, shared leadership and facilitation as the group continues.

⭐️ This is an informal group loosely based on the Creative Interventions Toolkit and other resources. Participants will come to each session ready to discuss, practice, learn, and share space with others to build accountable communities.

⭐️ Participants are encouraged to attend as many sessions as possible, but it is not required. Each meeting is welcome to anyone who wishes to engage in conversations about TJ/CA.

⭐️ Language Interpretation services are provided upon request.
