Family Jewels is a glittering, joyful, and unabashedly queer group show featuring 21
LGBTQ+ artists from across the country. The title perfectly captures the wit and
playful spirit that animates the exhibition, while also evoking the resplendent hues
that permeate much of the artwork. As a cheeky colloquialism, the phrase “family
jewels” imparts a touch of camp to this elegantly-curated affair. More profoundly, it
serves as a tender reminder that queer people have always relied on their chosen
families for safety, solidarity, and boundless love. Family Jewels foregrounds the
crucial importance of kinship and connection as a lifeline for the queer community.
