Sylvia Drake & Charity Bryant

Early Nineteenth-Century Same-Sex Couple

Charity Bryant (1777-1851)  and Sylvia Drake (1784-1868) met as young women in 1807. They were an admired and documented couple in Weybridge, Vermont for 44 years, running a tailoring business and sharing a home. They are buried under a single gravestone in Weybridge Hill Cemetery. Luckily for us, their diaries and correspondence, reflecting their relationship, have survived and are in the archives at the Sheldon Museum in Middlebury.
